Event travel questions
The things people ask most before booking flights for a major event.
When should I buy flights from Costa Rica for major events?
For concerts, football and festivals outside Central America, the sweet spot from SJO or LIR is 4 to 6 months ahead of the date. CRC fares climb hard 4 to 6 weeks out — to Coachella, the Super Bowl or Lollapalooza Chicago, jumps of 250,000 to 600,000 CRC in that window are standard. For regional events (Lollapalooza Argentina, Rock in Rio, Estéreo Picnic) 8 to 12 weeks usually does the job. Set a price alert on the exact route from Costa Rica and always check Tuesday and Wednesday departures — they tend to be 30,000 to 80,000 CRC cheaper than Friday flights. Compare United, Spirit, Avianca, Copa and JetBlue side by side; on Miami, Cancún and NYC routes the gap between the five can hit 100,000 CRC.
What are the cheapest routes and airports from Costa Rica to international events?
For the US, SJO–MIA on American or Spirit, SJO–IAH on United and SJO–JFK on JetBlue are frequent, well-priced routes for Florida concerts, F1 Miami and US tours. SJO–LAX on United is the shortest non-stop for Coachella. For South America, connecting via PTY on Copa or BOG on Avianca opens fares 100,000 to 250,000 CRC cheaper than double-connection routings for Lollapalooza Argentina, Rock in Rio or Estéreo Picnic. For Europe, SJO–MAD on Iberia is the only direct transatlantic option from Costa Rica; comparing against a connection via MIA on American can save 80,000 to 200,000 CRC. LIR is a strong seasonal alternative for travellers based in Guanacaste.
Which Costa Rican airport is best for travelling to events abroad?
Depends on destination and where you're based. SJO (Juan Santamaría) is the country's main hub: Avianca, Copa, United, American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, Volaris and Iberia operate there, keeping fares reasonable to the US, Europe, South America and Mexico. For travellers based in the North Pacific (Tamarindo, Nosara, Papagayo) or in Guanacaste, LIR (Daniel Oduber) is the better option — United, Delta, American and JetBlue run seasonal direct routes to Atlanta, Houston, Miami and New York that sometimes beat SJO by 80,000 to 200,000 CRC. Always compare both airports side by side, especially during high tourist season (December to April).
Can I book flights between multiple host cities on one ticket from Costa Rica?
Yes — and it's almost always cheaper in CRC than separate tickets. For a tour (CDMX concert + Bogotá festival + Lima show), use multi-city search: Avianca, Copa, United and Aeroméxico let you stitch SJO with intra-American legs on a single PNR, with savings of 100,000 to 300,000 CRC versus two one-ways. For short distances in Central America, TICA Bus, King Quality and Pullmantur coaches are comfortable and far cheaper. In Mexico, ADO Platino between CDMX, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Cancún beats short flights on comfort if you have an overnight to spare. Avoid stitching together separate OTA bookings — if one leg is delayed, the next airline owes you nothing.
Do Costa Ricans need a visa to attend events abroad?
For most major destinations, no. Costa Rica is in the US Visa Waiver Program — ESTA (around 21 USD, approved in minutes) is valid for 2 years, perfect for the Super Bowl, NBA, Coachella, Lollapalooza Chicago and concerts in NY, Miami or LA. The Schengen Area (Tomorrowland, Primavera Sound, Champions Final) is visa-free for up to 90 days — passport with 6 months validity required. The UK requires an online ETA (10 GBP) from 2025 for Glastonbury or Wimbledon. Canada requires an eTA (7 CAD). Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Japan and South Korea are visa-free. Australia requires a Subclass 600 visa. China and India still require consular visas — start the process when you confirm your SJO or LIR flight.
What if my flight from Costa Rica drops in price after I book?
United, American, Delta and JetBlue have eliminated change fees on Main Cabin and above on international routes — you only pay any fare difference. Avianca and Copa, on Plus and Business fares, allow changes with a reduced CRC fee; Basic fares offer almost no flexibility. Spirit is ultra-low-cost: changes and refunds rarely apply, though they allow a Flex Bundle upgrade for the difference. Some OTAs (Despegar Costa Rica, eDreams) honour 24-hour free cancellation — if the fare drops in that window, void and rebook. The most practical move is to keep the price alert running on your route. BAC Black, Banco Nacional Visa Signature, Promerica Black and Davivienda Black credit cards bundle travel insurance with cancellation cover, useful for expensive event trips.
