The USA stages 11 of the venues, topped by the Final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston serve as major airline hubs with intense competition and tend to be the most affordable US arrivals. The majority of arenas are NFL stadiums reconfigured for soccer, holding 60,000 to 82,000 fans.

Pre-Trip Checklist

Visa & Entry
Visa Waiver Program nationals need an ESTA ($21, apply online at least 72 hours before travel). For non-VWP nationals a B1/B2 tourist visa is required, and processing typically takes weeks. Lodge the application early; processing queues lengthen near the tournament.
Stays of up to 180 days are visa-free for most nationalities. You receive an FMM tourist permit at the border, or fill it out online before departure. Combining Mexico and US matches means separate entry authorisation for each country.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). For passports that need a full visa, plan to apply early. Processing is normally quick, though it can stretch during big events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
US Dollar (USD) is used. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost universally. Tipping culture is strong: 18-20% in restaurants, around $1-2 per drink at bars. Casual-restaurant meals run $15-25; fast food is $8-15. Stadium concessions cost noticeably more.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
CAD is the currency. Card payments — contactless included — are accepted everywhere. Restaurant tips run 15-20%. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Expect big differences city-to-city. Southern host cities (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) run hot and humid. On the West Coast (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) conditions are milder and drier. East Coast venues (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) trend warm and humid. Pack sunscreen and a hat — and stay hydrated at outdoor venues.
The wet season begins in June. Altitude in Mexico City (2,200m) keeps days moderate at 25°C, with evenings turning markedly cooler. Bring layers plus a rain jacket. Both Guadalajara and Monterrey are warmer (30-33°C) and more humid. Brief afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Some of the best weather Canada offers. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Conditions are pleasant for outdoor events in both cities. For evening matches, plan on light layers.
Practical Info
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V. English is the primary language. Uber and Lyft serve all of the host cities. Free WiFi is widespread at hotels, cafes, and airports. For mobile data, buy an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport. Public-transit coverage is mixed: very good in New York, thin in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B outlets, 127V (same as US). Spanish is spoken everywhere though English is widely understood in tourist areas and near stadiums. Uber and DiDi operate reliably in all three host cities. Grab a Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM at the airport — affordable data and calls.
A/B plugs, 120V — same as US. Toronto: English. Vancouver: English/French. Uber covers both cities. Transit is dependable — Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both reach the stadiums. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Costa Rica?

Book 4 to 5 months out — January through April 2026 is the best window from SJO or LIR. American, Delta, and Southwest all compete hard on Costa Rican routes, with frequent fare sales via newsletter in Q1. Because ESTA removes the visa-interview lead time, Ticos can book closer to the tournament than peers — but seat availability still tightens in April. For knockout rounds (late June to July 19), lock by March; La Sele qualification will pressure domestic demand even though diaspora traffic is smaller than Salvadoran or Honduran flows.

Can Costa Ricans enter the USA under ESTA?

Yes — Costa Rica joined the US Visa Waiver Program in 2024, making it the first Central American country on the VWP and the second Latin American country after Chile. Costa Rican passport holders apply for ESTA at esta.cbp.dhs.gov, pay USD 21, and receive approval in minutes to hours. ESTA is valid for 2 years and allows multiple entries of up to 90 days each. Your passport must be a biometric e-passport (most Costa Rican passports issued since 2022 qualify). ESTA replaces the B1/B2 interview entirely. For Mexico, no visa needed for Costa Ricans. For Canada, eTA (CAD 7) online is required.

Which Costa Rican airport is best for US host cities?

San José (SJO) is the primary international gateway with the most airlines, most frequency, and typically lowest fares. American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, and Avianca all run daily US flights. Liberia (LIR) in Guanacaste is the second airport, with year-round direct service to Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas on Delta, United, and American. LIR is convenient for travelers from northwest Costa Rica and pairs naturally with a pre or post-match Guanacaste beach stay. For Mexico host cities, Volaris Costa Rica runs SJO-MEX and SJO-GDL.

Can I pair matches with an eco-tourism trip in Costa Rica?

Yes — this is one of Costa Rica's World Cup advantages. International fans flying into SJO or LIR for a pre-match eco-tourism stop in Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, or Tortuguero, then onward to US host cities for matches, pair beautifully. Costa Rican travelers can reverse the trip: fly out to US matches, then return home for a post-tournament coastal holiday. LIR is right next to Guanacaste beaches. SJO is a 3 to 4 hour drive to most eco-lodges. Book domestic hops on Sansa for interior destinations.

What's the cheapest airline from Costa Rica to the USA?

Southwest is often the budget leader — direct SJO to Baltimore and SJO to Houston Hobby with no bag fees for 2 bags and a generous economy experience. American operates SJO to Miami and Dallas, often with competitive fares. JetBlue runs SJO to FLL. Spirit has entered the Costa Rican market with ultra-low-cost base fares that undercut everyone but charge aggressively for bags and seats. Compare total trip cost (base fare plus bags plus seats) rather than the teaser rate.

What about the colón versus USD for flight payment?

The Costa Rican colón (CRC) has been relatively stable versus the USD. Most Costa Rican credit and debit cards (BAC, BCR, Davivienda, Banco Nacional) work at US ATMs and retailers with typical 2 to 4% FX markups. Many Costa Rican airline bookings let you toggle between CRC and USD at checkout — paying in USD directly from a USD-denominated account (offered by BAC, Lafise, Scotiabank) skips the bank's conversion margin. US dollars are accepted widely throughout Costa Rica, so holding dollars ahead of your trip is easy.

Do I need travel insurance for the World Cup?

Yes — CCSS (Caja) covers Costa Ricans domestically but not abroad, and US medical costs can overwhelm even wealthy travelers. A short-term US travel policy with USD 100,000 medical coverage costs USD 25 to USD 60 for a two-week trip via Assist Card, Universal Assistance, or BAC Seguros. ESTA does not include insurance — CBP requires you to have means to pay for emergencies but does not verify insurance at entry. Confirm football and stadium coverage, and keep a digital PDF of the policy on your phone for US hospital admission.
